Yamaha YZF R6 Motorbikes: Sports Bikes With Superbike DNA
Having been in production since 1999 and undergone several revisions and updates, Yamaha YZF R6 motorbikes are the go-to for several racetrack enthusiasts. Find the YZF R6 and its various models on eBay.
Important updates to Yamaha YZF R6 motorbikes over the years
The Yamaha R6 has seen multiple revisions since its debut in 1999:
- The 2003 model was fuel-injected.
- The 2006 bike had a major upgrade in the form of an all-new engine management design that featured a multi-plate slipper clutch and YCC-T steer-by-wire throttle.
- The 2008 version employed the variable-length intake setup of the YCC-I for power optimisation at higher rpms and an enhanced Deltabox frame design.
- The 2017 model came with improved aerodynamics and styling cues borrowed from the Yamaha's R1, along with the front brakes and inverted 43 mm front fork, new rear shock, ABS brakes, magnesium subframe, traction control, and riding modes.
Significance of the Yamaha YZF R6 motorbike's engine
When introduced in 1999, the YZF R6 was viewed as the YZF-R1 superbike's supersport version. It also complemented the YZF600R, a more street-oriented bike. It featured Yamaha's brand-new engine design that could produce more than 108 hp or 81 kW when stationary. The YZF-R6 was the first four-stroke 600cc production motorbike in the world to churn out more than 100 hp in stock form. The major 2017 update to the bike didn't touch the engine, clearly indicating its supremacy.
Are there different ride modes to Yamaha YZF R6 motorbikes?
Yes. The R6 has three ride modes, something that riders who are familiar with the bike would know:
- A-mode: This mode offers the most belligerent throttle response, both on and off the track.
- STD: The standard mode is progressive and smooth, and something that most riders would be working with often.
- B-mode: B-mode is quite relaxed with its throttle response, which should help riders new to 600 cc bikes or during inclement riding conditions.
Though delivery varies across modes, full power is available in all three modes.
What are the updates or changes made to the newer Yamaha YZF R6 motorbikes?
The newer bikes have had a revision in both appearance and ergonomics.
- The windscreen is a couple of inches taller, for instance, on the 2018 model compared to the previous versions. This was done to provide the rider with increased wind deflection.
- The fuel tank, though unchanged in capacity, is now made out of aluminium instead of steel, helping the bike shave approximately 1.25 kg off its weight.
- The seats have got narrower and flatter. Moreover, the seating position has been revised, while retaining the 33.5-inch height.
- The dash has been updated with electronic aids, such as LCD displays. However, the classic honking analogue tachometer is still there.
